What is periodontal endoscope therapy?

Periodontal endoscope therapy is a minimally invasive, non-surgical treatment that uses a fiber-optic camera with 100x magnification to visualize and clean root surfaces in deep periodontal pockets. This allows for precise calculus removal, improving outcomes compared to traditional “blind” scaling and root planing (SRP).

What types of patients are best suited for endoscope therapy?

Endoscope therapy is ideal for patients with periodontal pockets ≥6 mm, residual bleeding or inflammation after SRP, or those hesitant about surgical treatment. It is especially effective for patients with:

  • Furcation involvement (spaces between roots)
  • Vertical bone defects
  • Residual pocketing after SRP
  • Medically compromised conditions where non-surgical treatment is preferred
How is endoscope-assisted SRP different from traditional SRP?

Traditional SRP is performed “blind,” relying on tactile feel to remove calculus without seeing below the gumline. This is less predictable in deep or complex areas. Endoscope-assisted SRP allows the clinician to directly see the root surface, ensuring:

  • More complete calculus removal
  • Better cleaning in deep pockets, furcations, and vertical defects
  • Fewer residual areas of infection
  • A non-surgical, cost-effective alternative to periodontal surgery
Why should our office bring in a traveling endoscope hygienist instead of referring out?  

Bringing the service in-house allows you to:

  • Keep patients under your care
  • Increase production without added overhead
  • Offer patients an advanced treatment option at a fraction of the surgical cost
How do patients benefit financially?

Endoscopic therapy is typically $2,000–$3,000 less expensive than periodontal surgery, while still providing excellent disease control. Insurance can often be applied, and we provide guidance for proper coding.

What does my office need to supply?

We bring the periodontal endoscope and specialized equipment. Your office will need to provide:

  • A fully equipped operatory
  • Basic disposables (barriers, suction tips, gauze, etc.)
  • Local anesthesia armamentarium
  • Access to dental software for charting and notes

We’ll send a checklist ahead of time so your team feels fully prepared.

How long does an appointment take?

full-mouth endoscope therapy appointment takes about 3 hours, and a half-mouth appointment takes about 1.5 hours. We also allot approximately 1 hour total for setup and breakdown of equipment. We’ll review the schedule with your team so the day runs smoothly.

Do we need special consent forms?

Yes. We provide customizable consent and post-op forms so your patients are informed and your documentation is complete.

How do follow-ups work?

Patients return to your office for re-evaluations and perio maintenance. We provide case notes and recommendations so your team can continue their care seamlessly.
